school visits

Opera in Williamsburg is particularly interested in sharing outstanding opera singing with school-age students. When we bring singers to town for a concert or for an opera, we make it a practice to arrange for opportunities for our singers to perform in schools.

School visits can take place in a particular class (chorus or theater), or they can take place in the school auditorium. We adapt the repertoire to the age of the students; we always include ensembles as well as arias and songs. In addition to performing, our singers engage the students in question-and-answer sessions about anything that individual students may ask — from singing technique to the challenges and joys of performing. Opera is an international field, and a group of our singers that visits a school may include people from any part of the world; recent examples include Korea, Israel, Russia, France, and Italy, as well as all parts of the USA.

Our school visits are provided at no cost to the schools

Additional possibilities

Master Classes

We can structure a school visit as a masterclass, where a professional singer with years of advanced training may work with student singers on singing technique, musical interpretation, or on diction.

Performance

We can put together a specific musical program, particularly song cycles in various languages (German, French, Spanish, or Italian).

Educational materials

We will be happy to search for and provide teachers and schools with educational materials about upcoming operas and about opera in general. Opera can cover several SOL areas.
